Dog Training Tips

If your dog is one of your best friends then you are not alone, if he is your source of protection you are not alone, if he helps you get from one place to the next then you are also not alone. Dogs are classified as man’s best friend and rightly so because they help us in so many ways. This is why training them is of the utmost importance so that they can know what you expect and be obedient. An obedient dog is a dog whose owner is happy and in turn the dog is happy.

Dog training is the modification of the behavior of a dog, this is usually done for a specific purpose. It may be done to have the dog fit into the family or to have the dog help with or take over a special job. Training should usually begin when the dog is young as the results will often be better and the dog and dog owner will experience less frustration. Remember that just like children, dogs learn from the environment and they also learn what is right or wrong based on what behaviors their owners are tolerant of and those that they are not as receptive to. Remember that a puppy just like a child will try to test what behaviors are acceptable and which one’s are not based on the response they get from important figures in their lives.

Here are some great dog training tips that will help you and your dog become great partners:

1. Do not let your training sessions go past 10 minutes, you will not be able to maintain the dogs attention span or his motivation.

2. Reward your dog whenever he is obedient to a command, if he isn’t then do not punish him, all you have to do is not reward him and he will understand. The dog may not have responded the way you wanted because of the complexity of the task, if you can simplify it or do a simpler task, then go ahead. This time you might get what you want and the dog will also get what he wants in the form of a reward.

3. Basic commands are an essential element of any training, these basic commands are “come” “sit” “stay” “down” or “stop” these are some of the first things you should teach your dog, when your dog understands these basic commands it makes teaching complex tasks easier. Consider these commands, foundation commands with these in place you have laid the groundwork for more complex commands.

4. Study your dog, find out what motivates him. Some dogs are motivated by food, others are motivated by petting and toys. Once you know what makes your dog tick, you can center the reward you offer for learning complex tasks.

Training your dog is not always the easiest task but it is one of the most rewarding, as a dog who is well trained is easier to deal with no matter what the situation he is being trained for, this usually makes for a more enjoyable relationship between the dog and the owner.
