$5 Spay or Neuter at Dekalb Animal Services in June 2010

That’s right folks. For the entire month of June of 2010, DeKalb County residents can get their dog(s) spayed/neutered for only $ 5! Thanks to the AARF at LifeLine Animal Project, this procedure is very affordable and is vital to keep the over population of animals from getting even more out of control. The fine print is that this special is only for dogs and you should stop by the Dekalb Animal Services shelter to pick up an original flyer with all of the details to take advantage of this offer. Stop by the shelter today!

Here’s Dekalb Animal Services information:

The Atlanta Humane Society is offering free spay or neuter services for cats during the entire month of February 2010! This service normally costs $ 60-$ 80 so don’t pass this up. You can book your appointment now by calling 404-875-6420.

Back in August, the Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Coalition (ARRC) had it’s very first fundraiser in efforts to raise money for the appropriate certifications to become an official Georgia Animal Rescue organization. The Total amount we raised from this event is $ 376 and some change. This is enough money to purchase and go through the process for 1 of 2 certifications needed. So we want to thank ALL for their donations, participation and purchases to help us raise the money we did!

The ARRC team arrived at 9:00 am at the Old Rock Gym at Sonoraville High School in Calhoun, GA. They began setting up and customers arrived a few minutes later. The location was awesome as they were set up a few miles from I-75 at the school. Our foot traffic was steady all day as a few youth football practices were held at a field next door. One member of the ARRC, Robin Rees, said “With the economy being tight for everyone we asked for reasonable prices and feel we were definitely rewarded for our efforts.”

“There were two memorable events that I can think of off the top of my head.” said Robin. “First when a young boy wanted a soccer ball and his mom hesitated with the purchase since she had already begun to carry her items to the her car. I called to him and threw him the ball and his face lit up as he bounced away with a huge smile on his face.” Robin continued to state the second event. “Another little boy was walking around with a skate board. After calling out to his parents who obviously said no on the skateboard, he had walked away kinda solemn. I called out to his mom and asked if it was OK for him to have it and as she said yes he grabbed it and ran away holding it tight to his chest in a bear hug.”

If it wasn’t for people generosity, we would not be able to touch animals or even people’s lives. We shout out a very special thanks to Mary McDaniel for organizing our first yard sale event! Other people whom we would like to send a special thank you to for collecting and donating items for this yard sale are:

  • Kim Wolfe and Kathe Kingston

  • Gary and Kimberly Murphy

  • Linda Kirby

  • Shirley Carter

  • Mary and Ed McDaniel

  • Coty Corrigan

  • Beth Greenway

We are ready to continue pressing on towards raising more funds so we can pay for our second certification. As the need of animal rescues continue to grow in Atlanta and all of Georgia, there is a need for more rescue organizations to accommodate them all. And that’s our goal!

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) provides education on care for animals in our homes and communities. They’ve recently released some newsletters that are beneficial in educating awareness about the illegal act of dog fighting and how we can all help to put an end to this cruel practice! Originally designed for students and teachers for grades 3 – 8, this information is clearly written and easily understandable for us of all ages.

Please read and feel free to pass on!

Why you should neuter your male dog and cat

THE ADVANTAGES OF NEUTERING MALE DOGS & CATS

DOGS:
– Has no effect on the dog’s alertness or natural protective instincts.
– Minimises sexual and territorial aggression.
– Reduces hyperactivity and the dog becomes more relaxed in its home environment.
– Lowers the dog’s general activity level (advantageous with certain breeds such as Boxers).
– The dog becomes more affectionate with the owners, children and other pets.
– Minimises or eliminates bad habits such as jumping over fences, chasing of cars, urinating in the house, etc.
– Minimises the likelihood of having prostate problems.

CATS:
– Neutered cats become more affectionate and less inclined to wander off their territories.
– Neutering reduces and even eliminates spraying altogether.
– Reduces and even eliminates “cat choruses” which are usually caused by unneutered males challenging each other for females “in season” or for territory (i.e. minimises sexual and territorial aggression).

DOGS AND CATS:
– Stops straying when females “in season” are in the neighbourhood and also reduces the possibility of the male getting into fights or being run over by a motor vehicle – which can prove to be costly in terms of veterinary fees.
– Prevents mating with females “in season” in the neighbourhood.
– Minimises or eliminates the possibility of the male contracting sexually trans¬mitted diseases.
– Reduces the possibility of the male developing tumours in the anus.
- Results can be expected to show within six weeks to three months of the operation.

A MALE CAN FERTILISE MORE FEMALES IN A YEAR THAN A FEMALE CAN HAVE LITTERS IN HER LIFETIME.

One female dog and her offspring, in 6 years, can be responsible for the birth of 67,000 dogs!!
One female cat and her offspring, in 7 years, can be responsible for the birth of 420,000 cats!!
Every sterilized cat or dog stops many unwanted babies and makes a huge difference.
