Canine Arthritis Treatment

Canine Arthritis Treatment

Canine Arthritis Treatment

Has your dog been moving slower lately?  Does it take your dog longer to get up after a nap?  Your dog could have arthritis in their joints.  Arthritis affects over 20 percent of the adult dogs in America and is a very common source of pain in dogs.
Canine Arthritis is a degenerative disease of the joints.  It is a progressive disease that can affect the quality of your dog’s life.  Arthritis can occur in any joint in your dog’s body.  It is most often seen in the dog’s hip joints.  It can permanently affect the dog’s quality of life.
Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to arthritis.  The large and giant breeds tend to suffer from arthritis more than smaller breeds do.  Arthritis usually affected dog that are middle aged or older.  Dogs that suffer from hip dysplasia may exhibit arthritis in the hip joints at a younger age.  Arthritis may also occur in joints that have suffered an injury.
Our dogs can’t tell us what is wrong, so it’s important to observe them carefully.   Some signs that could indicate arthritis are limping, not wanting to sit, not wanting to jump up or play and gaining weight.
Arthritis Treatments
•Diet is a very important component of an arthritis management program.  It is very important to feed your dog a high quality food.  The dog food should be high in protein to help maintain your dog’s muscle mass.  Many people have had success at reducing the symptoms of arthritis by feeding their dogs a raw diet.  Wheat can cause inflammation in certain dogs, so it is usually best to avoid foods that contain wheat and wheat by products.  Corn and soy can also cause arthritis symptoms to worsen and should also be avoided in the dog’s diet.  Also make sure the dog’s treats do not contain wheat, corn or soy.  Many dogs with arthritis show marked improvement in symptoms when they are switched to a grain free diet.  Mangos, pineapples, celery, ginger and alfalfa can be added to your dog’s food and may help with arthritis symptoms.   Don’t over feed your dog.  It is very important to keep your dog at a healthy weight.  Any extra weight will add more stress to the dog’s already painful joints.
•Bromelain is an enzyme that is found in pineapples.  It is available in a supplement form that can be added to your dog’s diet.  It works to help reduce inflammation in your dog’s joints.  It works best if given an hour or two before meals.
•Vitamin C will help to prevent further joint damage and deterioration and help to keep the dogs muscles healthy.  Vitamin C is available as a powder and can be added to your dog’s food every day.  Start slowly with a small dose and build up to 1,000mg to 2,000 mg per day.  If the dog gets loose stools, cut back on the Vitamin C for a few days and then gradually increase it once the dog’s stools return to normal
•Hyaluronic acid is another supplement that can provide relief from arthritis pain.  Hyaluronic acid is normally present in healthy joints and supplementation with it may help restore levels of the acid in the joints.  It can be injected or given as an oral supplement.
•Herbs can help to reduce inflammation in the dog.  The best herbs to use are turmeric, curcumin, hawthorn, yucca root, boswellia and nettle leaf.  These herbs can be given in a supplement or tincture form.
•Glucosamine and Chondroiton Sulfate along with MSM can help to lubricated and protect your dog’s joints.  Numerous studies have been performed on the effects of glucosamine and it has been proven to be effective in relieving the symptoms of arthritis in dogs.  Glucosamine can help to relieve symptoms as well as actually protect the joints. Glucosamine may be more effective if it is given on an empty stomach, but your dog will still benefit from it even if it is given with meals.  Maganese nay help the glucosamine to be better absorbed by the dog.   Glucosamine is not a fast acting solution and it may take a few weeks before the beneficial effects are noticed.
•Omega fatty acids can work as an anti-inflammatory in the dog’s arthritic joints.  The Omega fatty acids also help to lubricate the joints.  These fatty acids can also help the dog to lose weight, which will take stress off the arthritic, painful joints.
•Exercise is very important to help control the symptoms of arthritis.  Gently exercise helps to maintain muscle mass and does not stress the joints.  The exercise should be low impact to avoid further damage to the joints.  Walking is a good form of exercise for a dog with arthritis.  Dogs should be exercised on a regular basis.  Physical therapy can help dogs with arthritis.  The therapist will be able to exercise the arthritic joints through a full range of motion.  They will also be able to design an exercise program for the owner to follow at home.  Your physical therapist may also offer hydrotherapy for your dog.
•Acupuncture has produced noticeable improvements in dogs that suffer from arthritis.  It can provide relief from hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, as well as arthritis.  Acupuncture can help to bring increased circulation to inflamed arthritic joints.  It can also help to relieve muscle spasms and can help to slow cell degeneration in joints.
•Warmth can provide temporary relief from arthritis pain for your dog.  Provide a thick blanket or cushion so your dog does not have to lie on a cold hard floor.  Heated pet beds or mats are available, but make sure they are placed so that the dog cannot chew the cord.  You can also fill a tube sock with rice and microwave it until it is warm and place it on your dog’s sore, stiff joints.
Arthritis can be a painful, debilitating disease, but there are many natural remedies that can offer relief for your pet.  Some remedies work better than other for certain pets.  Try one thing and if your pet does not get relief from the pain, they move on to another remedy.

Natural Treatment of Constipation in Cats, Dogs and Other Pets

Dogs rarely get constipated unless it’s associated with another condition, such as arthritis, liver or gallbladder issues, parasites, or a side effect of medication.  The same goes for the majority of herbivorous animals, such as horses.  Cats, however, can develop a condition called Megacolon that results in severe constipation (obstipation). Some pet fish are also prone to constipation, such as laterally compressed species.

“Normal” constipation is usually treated with an enema, but surgery and/or medication may be necessary for chronic obstipation.  There are natural treatments for constipation in pets, which can be used alone or in conjunction with clinical treatments.  Like most natural pet remedies, these treatments have not been widely studied and should only be administered under the guidance of your veterinarian.

Diet

Krill & Seaweed for Pets

Ground Krill & Mixed Seaweed

Pet Food & Water – Poor quality pet food usually contains poor quality (or too little) protein and/or too much fat, which can cause constipation in any pet.  Research your pet’s optimum diet to ensure your pet food contains the appropriate ingredients and nutritional balance.  Water is very important for all body functions, including digestion.

Probiotics – Often all it takes to treat constipation is a bit of plain, active yogurt, three times per day.  It can be mixed into food or fed directly if your pet will eat it.

Fibrous vegetables – Dogs will usually eat at least some fibrous vegetables without too much coaxing.  Cats aren’t big fans of vegetables and normally they don’t require them.  However, vegetables that are low(ish) in carbohydrates, yet rich in fiber, can be highly beneficial for constipated cats and dogs.  Pumpkin and seaweed are often recommended as low-carb vegetable sources of fiber.  Brown and red seaweeds are especially effective in the treatment of constipation through the regulation of normal bowl function and gentle cleansing of the gastrointestinal tract with its mucilaginous substances (it even treats Irritable Bowl Syndrome).  Seaweed is also a natural source of Taurine.

Other Roughage – Roughage doesn’t have to come from vegetable fiber.  Rehydrated freeze-dried Krill offers both roughage and optimum nutrition without straying from the carnivorous diet. It’s easily mixed into your pet’s regular food and they love the taste.  Pureed Sardines (unseasoned, packed in water or fresh) are another option.

Herbs

The most effective way to get herbs into pets is by making a tea.  Cats or small dogs can have 1/4-1/2 tsp of strong tea per 15 pounds of weight.  Larger dogs can be given 1 tsp of herbal tea per 30 pounds of weight.  The tea can be administered 2-3 times per day.  These dosage recommendations are included in the book, Herbs for PetsHerbs for Pets: The Natural Way to Enhance Your Pet, by Gregory Tilford and Mary Wulff.

Professionals often reach for Chickweed first when dealing with constipation in a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses, llamas, goats, etc.  It’s gentle, effective, and it soothes the digestive system.

The majority of herbs recommended for constipation actually focus on bile production and transport, such as Oregon Grape, Dandelion Root and Yellow Dock (also a laxative).  If constipation is attributed to a liver problem, a holistic veterinarian may recommend the short-term use of Milk Thistle, Licorice, or Turmeric.  Essential fatty acids can also be added to the diet to support liver function.

Colonic lubricating herbs for pets include Marshmallow Root, Flaxseed, Psyllium Husks and Chickweed.

Fennel can be used to relieve gas or griping associated with constipation. Simply add a bit to your herbal tea mixture.

Laxative herbs (Anthraquinones) can cause a great deal of discomfort in the bowl because they stimulate peristalsis (muscle contractions).  We strongly recommend a trip to the Vet if constipation is so severe you are considering natural laxatives.  Having used a natural laxative for myself, I can attest to the pain they can cause.  They should only be used when absolutely necessary and should not be used on pregnant pets. Natural laxatives include Yellow Dock, Aloe, Cascara, Sagrada, and Senna. Yellow Dock is recommended as the most gentle of the herbs containing Anthraquinones.

Note:  When using dried herbs for constipation, either make a herbal tea or rehydrate the herbs before feeding.  It’s important to use only fresh or gently dehydrated herbs for optimum effectiveness.  We rely on Starwest Botanicals for premium, human-grade herbs, essential oils and nutraceuticals.  If you prefer a manufactured treatment, Natural Moves for Pets (available at Pet Alive) is a popular choice.

Chronic Diarrhea Causes and Treatment - All Herbal Remedies

Chronic Diarrhea

diarrhea causes treatment visual guideDiarrhea in general is when you experience 3 or more liquid or loose stool bowel movements per day. It commonly leads to death in developing countries. It causes severe dehydration and loss of nutrients from your body. You also lose important electrolytes important for healthy, hydration and electrical activity (brain and body energy) and can lead to you feeling sluggish with foggy thinking ability.

It becomes chronic when it occurs on a daily basis, and you just can’t seem to have normal bowel movements, no matter what you do. This chronic condition also causes your body to develop chronic inflammation in your whole body. If left unchecked, it can lead to a whole host of inflammatory conditions, like arthritis, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (ibd), inflammatory bowel syndrome (ibs), Celiac disease, Diverticulitis, Colitis and many forms of irritable bowel disease.

Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

Most diarrhea is caused by a norovirus or rotavirus, which causes gastrointestinal inflammation (GI) and severe bloating, gas and discomfort. It can also be caused by bacteria or fungal type infections which are more acute (fast and furious) rather than chronic, like the viral types. Toxins can accumulate, particularly in elderly people who have not have regular bowel movements or have also had bouts of constipation in between.

Diarrhea can also be caused by taking pharmaceutical medications prescribed by your doctor, or over the counter (OTC) meds as well. Chemotherapy and other toxic cancer treatments will also cause diarrhea as long as you are taking them. Once it is over you should immediately detox your intestines and add probiotics and natural zeolites (Esdifan)

If you encounter blood in your diarrhea this is usually dysentery instead of typical diarrhea. It is an inflammation of the colon and the walls of the intestines that may contain mucus, and sometimes even a fever. If it is accompanied by a fever, then you may want to seek medical attention because it can be a severe infection that needs to be treated immediately. Use the treatment at the bottom of the page so you can bring your colon and intestines back to normal working order.

Green or Yellow Diarrhea

This is caused by an excess of bile secreted by the gall bladder. This is usually nothing to be too alarmed about as it means that your food has passed through the intestines faster than normal, and has not had the chance to change from green or yellow to the normal rich brown color. Eating some healthy solid foods and probiotics (yogurt or fermented foods, even red wine) can help your colon return to normal, and bring your bowel movements back to normal.

Fortunately, there is a great treatment that will work to give you back lost energy, while you lose weight and gain skin radiance. It’s not so much what you eat, rather what you absorb. With diarrhea, you are not absorbing the nutrients, just passing them and weakening your colon.

Chronic Diarrhea Treatment

There are some natural enzyme detoxifiers with probiotics you can take that are powerful colon cleansers that will help rebuild and repopulate the colon. While you cleanse the colon, you will also want to get rid of the viruses and other pathogens that are causing the diarrhea in the first place. Standard medical treatments are great at stopping the diarrhea temporarily but usually do not treat the cause, and for sure not in a way that give you a boost in health, instead of robbing your health by harmful side-effects (also known as robbing Peter to pay Paul syndrome.)

ESDIFAN is a holistic diarrhea supplement with very unique properties. It was discovered life – long sufferer, who was nominated for a Pulitzer prize for this discovery! It removes toxins from your digestive tract and stops diarrhea and stomach pains fast without the side effects of other diarrhea aid products. It is anatural diarrhea treatment that will completely remove toxins from your body.

It contains natural zeolite which is one of only a few minerals on earth that are negatively charged (disease organisms and toxins are positively charged) and works similar to a magnet by attracting and removing toxins from the body. It has a natural honeycomb shape that traps the toxins and then escorts them out of the body.

Zeolite is now being used by the scientific community to detox and clean up after nuclear radiation accidents, like Chernobyl and Fukushima. They give it to the children and it is successfully removing the toxins and radioactivity from their bodies. It was so intriguing a discovery that it led to numerous studies on Zeolite’s positive effect on humans and the environment.
